Underinvestment Key Factor Driving Exodus of African Athletes

The Paris 2024 Olympics featured numerous African athletes who opted to represent other countries, achieving great success. One of these athletes, Bahrain’s Winfred Yavi, set an Olympic record in the 3,000m steeplechase. She previously represented Kenya. Another is the USA’s Annette Nneka Echikunwoke, who won a silver medal in the hammer throw competition. She previously represented Nigeria. According to experts, this trend is primarily the result of Africa’s underinvestment in sports facilities and talent development pipelines. However, other factors like the incompetence of sports authorities and the allure of higher financial incentives play a part. As long as these disparities persist, experts predict that athletes will continue switching nationalities, especially as wealthier countries invest more in their sports industries. To stem the exodus of Africa’s athletic talent, countries across the continent should create an enabling environment for athletes’ success, from improved sporting facilities and structures to better remunerations.
