Tanzanian authorities have released most of the leaders of the nation’s opposition party, Chadema, following mass arrests of around 520 party members over allegations they were planning violent protests. Chadema spokesman John Hrema confirmed that the party’s chairman, Freeman Mbowe, and his deputy, Tundu Lissu, were among those released. While authorities claimed all top leaders had been freed, Chadema disputed this. However, the party did not provide the names of those it alleges are still in custody. The arrests occurred during a rally to mark International Youth Day, raising concerns about a possible return to the repressive politics seen under late President John Magufuli. President Samia Suluhu Hassan, vice president under Magufuli, had promised to restore competitive politics upon taking office. However, these arrests have raised questions about her sincerity, especially when considered alongside arrests last year of people planning protests against a port management deal.
