The first day of US-led peace talks aimed at resolving Sudan’s ongoing conflict concluded on Wednesday in Geneva, with the country’s military absent and the presence of the other warring faction, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), unclear. Despite the dire humanitarian crisis in Sudan, which has displaced over 10.7 million people and led to severe famine conditions, the military declined to participate, citing ongoing RSF seizures of civilian homes. The talks included diplomats from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UAE, the African Union, and the UN, but it remains uncertain whether RSF representatives attended, despite earlier reports of their arrival. The conflict between Sudan’s military and the RSF, which began in April 2023, has resulted in thousands of deaths and widespread atrocities, prompting urgent international efforts to facilitate humanitarian access and a ceasefire.
