Stampede at Kagame Election Rally Kills One and Injures Dozens

One person died and dozens were injured in a crush at an election rally for Rwandan President Paul Kagame as campaigning for the July general election began. The incident occurred in Rubavu district, northern Rwanda, resulting in injuries to 37 people, with four hospitalized for serious injuries. The ministry of local government sent condolences to the deceased’s family and apologized for the incident. Kagame, running for a fourth term, has been Rwanda’s leader since 1994 when his rebel group put an end to the Rwandan genocide. He won the last election, held in 2017, with almost 99% of the vote and is widely expected to win the upcoming one. He will compete against Frank Habineza of the Democratic Green Party and independent Philippe Mpayimana. Rwandans will vote on July 15.
