Hundreds of Somalis, including senior officials, protested in Mogadishu against al-Shabaab militants. The protests were sparked by Friday’s deadly attack at Lido Beach View, which killed 37 and injured 247. The demonstration, held at the attack site, featured anti-al-Shabaab placards and chants like “We don’t want al-Shabaab” and “The people of Mogadishu are not afraid of al-Shabaab.” Protesters, including survivors, ministers, and officials, emphasized solidarity with the victims and defiance against terrorism. The Friday attack began when a suicide bomber detonated an explosive device at the hotel’s entrance followed by five other attackers who stormed the site looking to wreak more havoc. Security forces quickly neutralized the attackers, capturing one who was driving a car filled with explosives. Unfortunately, one soldier was killed and another wounded in the ensuing altercation. Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the incident, which it said killed 54 people.
