Nigerian police arrested over 90 demonstrators carrying Russian flags during protests against economic hardship. The appearance of Russian flags at these rallies, reminiscent of recent coups in Sahel countries, where military leaders have aligned with Russia, prompted strong reactions from officials. Police spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi confirmed the arrests as well as the number of demonstrators involved. His confirmation was followed by an allegation by Nigeria’s security chiefs that unnamed “sponsors,” who are seeking to undermine the government, are behind the flag-carrying demonstrators. Despite the government’s allegations, a protest organizer, Damilare Adenola, dismissed the claims. He stated that they are a mere distraction and a tool by the government to justify a crackdown on protesters. Meanwhile, the Russian embassy in Nigeria has denied any involvement in the protests.
