Niger has followed Mali’s lead and severed diplomatic ties with Ukraine, accusing Kyiv of supporting “terrorist groups.” This move follows Mali’s decision two days prior after its army suffered heavy losses to Tuareg rebels in late July. The conflict, which occurred near the Algerian border, led to significant casualties, with Tuareg separatists claiming to have killed 84 Wagner fighters and 47 Malian soldiers. The Nigerien government’s spokesman, Amadou Abdramane, announced Niger’s decision and expressed solidarity with Mali, criticizing Ukraine for allegedly providing intelligence to the rebels. Mali’s decision to cut off ties with Ukraine was based on statements by Andriy Yusov, a Ukrainian military intelligence spokesman, who implied that his government supplied the rebels with information for the attack. Ukraine has since denied these accusations, emphasizing adherence to international law and regretting Mali’s decision.
