Mozambique has begun a 45-day campaign ahead of its October 9 presidential and parliamentary elections, where over 17 million voters will select a new leader to succeed President Filipe Nyusi. Daniel Chapo, the ruling Frelimo party’s candidate, faces strong competition from independent Venâncio Mondlane, as well as Ossufo Momade of Renamo and Lutero Simango of the Mozambique Democratic Movement. Chapo promises to combat corruption and attract investment to boost the economy. Mondlane, running under the slogan “Save Mozambique!, this country is ours!” vows to establish a transparent government and ensure resources benefit local communities. These will be Mozambique’s seventh elections since the end of its civil war in 1992.
