Leading the “Wakanda Forever” Soundtrack Caps a Stunning Rise for Nigeria’s Tems

Although it won’t hit theatres until November, “Wakanda Forever,” the sequel to the immensely popular “Black Panther,” is already creating buzz thanks to a new film teaser and a musical drop featuring Nigerian artist Tems. Her haunting Bob Marley cover accompanies the teaser and is one of 3 songs on an EP released on July 25 by Marvel Studios.  Since her song is the one used in the official two-minute teaser, Tems’s haunting vocals are serving as the background for the public’s expectations for the new Black Panther. Accompanying the sequel with songs by two young African artists (Ghanaian artist Amaarae has A Body, A Coffin on the EP) feels like a step in that direction. The songs are built around the Black Panther sequel, a story about protecting Wakanda from an invasion after the death of King T’Challa.
