Khartoum’s Envoy Clashes with UAE Counterpart Over Sudan’s Conflict During UN Security Council Meeting

Sudan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) engaged in a heated exchange at the UN Security Council on Tuesday over Sudan’s accusations that the UAE is supplying weapons to the rival Rapid Support Forces (RSF) amid Sudan’s ongoing civil war. Sudan’s UN Ambassador Al-Harith Idriss Al-Harith Mohamed accused the UAE of backing the RSF in the conflict that began in April last year. In response, UAE UN Ambassador Mohamed Abushahab dismissed the claims as “ludicrous” and a distraction from the severe violations occurring on the ground. The conflict, sparked by a struggle for power between the Sudanese army and the RSF, has resulted in nearly 25 million people needing aid, with famine looming and eight million displaced from their homes. UN sanctions monitors have labeled the accusations of the UAE’s military support to the RSF as “credible,” though the UAE firmly denies any involvement in supporting Sudan’s warring factions.
