The Kenya Aviation Workers Union has announced a strike starting next Monday in response to a proposed deal with India’s Adani Airport Holdings to develop Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), the country’s largest airport. According to the union, the deal will lead to job losses and the replacement of Kenyan workers with foreign workers. In its strike action notice published on Monday, the union labeled the deal as a sale and called on the government to halt it. However, the Kenyan government has denied the claim, stating that the airport is not for sale. The government further said that the Adani deal is still under review as part of a potential public-private partnership to upgrade the overstretched airport. If the strike proceeds, it could severely disrupt operations at JKIA, including those of Kenya Airways, the national carrier.
