According to Numbeo’s mid-2024 rankings, four of the five top African cities for quality of life are South African. According to the ranking, which considers various factors, including purchasing power, safety, healthcare, cost of living, property price to income ratio, traffic commute time, pollution, and climate, Cape Town ranks as the city with the best quality of life. It boasts an impressive Quality of Life Index score of 159.6. Following Cape Town, three other South African cities made the top five: Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Durban, each distinguished by similar metrics of quality living. Nairobi, Kenya, ranks fifth with an index score of 97.4, highlighting its continued development in various sectors. The cities’ rankings reflect the significant urbanization and economic development driven by sectors such as technology, finance, and tourism. This growth has improved living standards, making these cities desirable places to live despite the broader challenges faced across the continent.
