EU-funded Egyptian Border Guards Forcibly Deported Sudanese Refugees

Egyptian authorities have been using EU-funded security forces to conduct mass arrests and forcible deportations of Sudanese refugees, according to a report by Amnesty International. Between January and March 2024, around 800 Sudanese detainees were forcibly returned to Sudan without being given the opportunity to claim asylum. Worse, the campaign has reportedly targeted black individuals in Cairo, Giza, and Aswan, leading to widespread panic among refugees. Some of these were arrested in public hospitals and detained in poor conditions before being deported. The process begins with the Egyptian police arresting the refugees and then detaining them in makeshift detention camps maintained by Egyptian border guards. The EU has provided significant funding to Egypt for border management and to handle the influx of Sudanese refugees, raising concerns about EU complicity in human rights abuses.
