Felix Tshisekedi, the president of the Democratic Republic of Congo, has accused former President Joseph Kabila of backing a rebel group intent on overthrowing his administration. Tshisekedi made this claim during an interview with Top Congo FM. He alleged that Kabila supports the Congo River Alliance (AFC), which is aiding the M23 rebellion in the country’s eastern region. The AFC was the target of US sanctions last month for its part in Congo’s political instability and conflict. In response, Kabila’s associate, Barnabe Kikaya Bin Karubi, dismissed Tshisekedi’s claims as “nonsense,” stating that Kabila would not respond to such provocations. The M23 rebellion has displaced over 1.8 million people since 2021, with Congo and UN experts accusing Rwanda of supporting the insurgents. Rwanda denies these allegations, while the M23 claims to protect Congolese Tutsis’ rights.
