Collapsed Dam Kills Dozens in Sudan

A catastrophic dam collapse in eastern Sudan has claimed at least 30 lives and likely many more, with surging floodwaters devastating 20 villages. The Arbaat Dam, overwhelmed by torrential rains on August 25, failed around 40 km north of Port Sudan, which serves as the country’s de facto capital and major aid hub. The flooding, which has impacted about 50,000 people and left infrastructure in ruins, threatens Port Sudan’s water supply. Initial reports suggest up to 200 people are missing, and significant damage was noted, including destroyed electricity and water systems. The dam collapse exacerbates the already dire situation, including the destruction of infrastructure, caused by Sudan’s ongoing civil war.
