Botswana celebrated sprinter Letsile Tebogo’s historic Olympic victory with a massive homecoming event at the National Stadium in Gaborone. Tens of thousands of fans, waving the national flag, welcomed the athlete home after he became the first African to win the men’s 200m gold medal at the Olympics. Tebogo set an African record time of 19.46 seconds at the games in Paris and helped Botswana secure a silver medal in the men’s 4x400m relay. With his contributions, the country won a total of four medals at the games. The celebration included a half-day public holiday, traditional dances, and a parade through the capital. Following his win, Tebogo dedicated his gold medal to his mother, who died in May after a brief illness.
