Blinken Urges Sudanese Army to Join Ceasefire Talks

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken urged Sudan’s army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan to participate in upcoming ceasefire talks in Switzerland during a call on Monday, according to the US State Department. In a later statement, Burhan revealed his discussion with Blinken, stating he had emphasized the need to address Sudanese government concerns before negotiations begin. The Sudanese leader had announced last week that the Sudanese government would not participate in the peace talks following an attempt on his life. Prior to this, the government said it would only participate in the negotiations if its rival, the Rapid Support Forces, made a full withdrawal and halted expansion efforts. However, the government requested meetings with US officials to discuss the talks’ agenda, raising hopes it will participate. Meanwhile, RSF leader Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo has already stated that his side will participate in the peace talks.
