Nigeria’s Afrobeats scene is thriving globally, with stars like Burna Boy and Rema headlining international festivals. This success is bolstered by global music giants like Sony and Universal, who have established a strong presence in Lagos, turning the city into a music powerhouse. However, while top artists are enjoying unprecedented success, the industry’s transformation has made it increasingly difficult for new talents to break through. The cost of producing music, marketing, and gaining media access has soared, creating a barrier for emerging artists without significant financial backing. Although platforms like TikTok and streaming services offer exposure, the financial demands of the industry limit opportunities. With fewer breakthrough artists emerging each year, the scene risks stagnation, though the aspiration for stardom continues to motivate many young Nigerian musicians.
