Before the event, Du Plessis had stirred controversy by claiming he was the UFC’s “first real African champion,” a statement that angered Adesanya. However, after the fight, Du Plessis gave Adesanya a jacket with the South African flag as a gesture of respect. Adesanya also expressed his respect for Du Plessis stating that he will inspire the next generation of African fighters, like himself, Kamaru Usman, and Francis Ngannou had done.
