Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has welcomed recent US aid cuts as a push toward greater national self-reliance, calling them “painful but necessary.” Speaking in London, he said the reductions would encourage Zambia to strengthen its economy and fund social programs domestically. The US, which provided nearly $598 million in aid to the country in 2023—mostly for health services—slashed $50 million this year following theft scandals. Despite the short-term strain, Hichilema has increased healthcare spending by 13% and pledged reforms to curb corruption. He reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to international cooperation and urged the US and China to end their trade tensions. Meanwhile, Zambia’s debt restructuring nears completion, with economic growth projected to hit 6% this year.
