Zambia Opposition Challenges Hichilema’s Election Victory
Zambian opposition leader Brian Mundubile says he will challenge President Hakainde Hichilema’s re-election in court, citing alleged irregularities in voting, counting, and results transmission. The electoral commission declared Hichilema the winner with about 60% of the vote, compared with 38% for Mundubile, but tensions rose after polling as authorities arrested 11 opposition figures and temporarily suspended counting following reports of violence and ballot theft. Hichilema entered the election with a strong economic record, including debt restructuring and an economic turnaround, giving him a clear advantage. Yet accusations of shrinking political space could undermine the credibility of his second term in the long run. His swearing-in is expected within a week of the commission publishing the final results. However, the legal challenge could delay proceedings, testing the durability of Zambia’s democratic institutions.
