While Nigeria’s recent economic reforms show promising macro-level results, including stronger growth and rising foreign reserves, daily life remains a struggle for most citizens. Official improvements have not translated into tangible relief, with high unemployment, persistent poverty, and widespread informal sector activity defining the reality for millions. The core issue is that this growth has not been inclusive or job-intensive, focusing on sectors like finance and oil that are not labor-intensive, rather than manufacturing and agro-processing. To truly turn the corner, an economist argues for a decisive policy shift toward deliberate job creation, meaningful social support such as cash transfers, and public works programs. Ultimately, economic stability must be intentionally channeled into improving living conditions to ensure that national progress benefits all Nigerians.
