The United States is increasing diplomatic engagement with Eritrea and Somalia as escalating attacks on Red Sea shipping threaten one of the world’s most important trade corridors. Senior White House adviser Massad Boulos recently met officials from both countries in Cairo to discuss Horn of Africa security alongside Egyptian counterparts. With disruptions already affecting both the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Strait of Hormuz, Washington is seeking to prevent instability on Africa’s Red Sea coast. If successful, the United States will gain greater diplomatic influence over events in the region. Horn of Africa states could also strengthen ties with Washington through greater security cooperation. In contrast, armed groups threatening maritime routes will face heightened international scrutiny. Over time, the region’s strategic importance is likely to increase further as global powers compete to safeguard critical maritime trade and energy supply routes.
