Ugandan diplomat Olara Otunnu has entered the race to succeed UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, becoming the seventh candidate vying for the post. Uganda formally nominated the 75-year-old, a former UN Under-Secretary-General, in a letter sent to the presidents of the General Assembly and Security Council. While in office, he served as the Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict. Otunnu has pledged to push forward institutional reforms, prioritize ending major global conflicts, and establish a body to govern UN oversight of artificial intelligence. His nomination comes as the UN faces mounting pressure to improve efficiency, reduce bureaucracy, and restore its global influence. Other contenders include former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, IAEA chief Rafael Grossi, and former Senegalese President Macky Sall.
