Tanzania is undergoing its largest transport infrastructure transformation since independence, aiming to become a regional logistics powerhouse. The country’s Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), now partially operational, has already attracted more than 6 million passengers since services began in 2024. Scheduled for completion by 2030, the electrified railway will eventually connect Burundi, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Its Dar es Salaam–Dodoma route has already cut travel times to four hours from as much as ten hours by road. The project runs alongside the modernization of Dar es Salaam Port, which has doubled container throughput and reduced ship waiting times from 10 days to three. Concurrently, Tanzania is expanding Tanga Port to export Ugandan crude oil via the East African Crude Oil Pipeline and partnering with Chinese firms on a $1.4 billion rehabilitation of the 1,860-kilometer TAZARA railway to Zambia.
