The Sudanese army says it has recaptured the strategic Al Sadarat highway connecting Khartoum to el-Obeid, a city besieged by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces for months. The recapture, which took two days of intense fighting, is expected to ease military logistics and cut off the RSF’s advance toward el-Obeid, where roughly half a million people remain trapped. The army said troops retook surrounding towns, inflicting heavy losses on RSF fighters. Analysts say the route restores a direct link between the capital and Kordofan for the first time in months, potentially easing pressure on isolated communities and reopening trade corridors for livestock and agricultural goods. The RSF had held most of the 217-mile corridor since fighting erupted in April 2023.
