South Africa’s SME Fund plans to help mobilize up to $609 million in venture capital to accelerate the growth of high-potential startups and strengthen the country’s innovation ecosystem. The fund aims to secure $122 million in initial commitments in 2027 before drawing in additional institutional capital. Meanwhile, industry data show South Africa’s venture capital sector has invested almost $1 billion in over 1,100 companies during the past decade. Almost one-third of that total, over $300 million, has been realized through successful exits. Supporters believe expanding venture funding will stimulate job creation, encourage innovation, and provide alternative financing for businesses. This, in turn, will help South Africa tackle sluggish economic growth and persistently high unemployment.
