Small Festivals Reshape South Africa’s Live Music Scene

A new generation of South African cultural organizers is building a resilient live-music ecosystem through small, independently run festivals and recurring events. Umanyano Lwe Jazz, founded by Zukiswa White, recently clocked five years. The platform is built on what organizers describe as patient, long-term investment in Black cultural production. Meanwhile, Kids Love Jazz expanded this year into a 13-city tour across Southern Africa, drawing more than 10,000 attendees despite lacking corporate sponsorship. Other collectives are following the same path. Your Weekly Touch Up, which has hosted more than 300 performers over three years, is preparing its first festival after establishing a loyal audience through weekly events. The growth of these organizations comes as some larger festivals scale back or disappear, highlighting how smaller Black-owned organizations are sustaining live music through community-building, self-funding, careful curation, and long-term commitment.
