UNESCO has inscribed six historic medinas in the Comoros onto its World Heritage List, marking the archipelago’s first entries on the registry. Dating from the 12th to 14th centuries, the medinas feature palaces, mosques, public squares, and narrow streets that reflect the architectural legacy of the region’s sultanate era. Four of the sites are on Grande Comore, including the 14th-century capital Moroni’s medina with its landmark Friday Mosque, while two are on Anjouan. Officials say the designation will help protect the fragile settlements, many of which have been threatened by uncontrolled urbanization and deteriorating infrastructure. Heritage advocates hope the designation will promote cultural and architectural tourism while safeguarding traditions that remain central to everyday life in the island nation.
