Senegal Chooses to Reprofile Debt Rather Than Restructure

By Reuters·Edited by Editor TO·

Senegal’s prime minister has disclosed that the country will reprofile its debt—extending maturities and renegotiating interest rates—rather than pursue a full restructuring. The announcement follows a staff-level agreement with the IMF for a $2.2 billion, three-year loan package. The previous lending program was suspended in 2024 following revelations that debt figures had been misreported under the previous administration. Following that agreement, Senegal’s finance ministry stated that the country had agreed to an enhanced framework meant to restore debt sustainability. The prime minister, appointed in May after the president dismissed the government led by Ousmane Sonko, also said roughly 30 mining agreements are currently being renegotiated. The government’s decision signals an effort to manage debt pressures while preserving a financing relationship with the IMF.
