Researchers working on Zimbabwe’s Lake Kariba have named a new dinosaur species, Musango matusadonaensis, after eight years of excavation and fossil analysis. The bipedal dinosaur, believed to have been either an herbivore or an omnivore, lived roughly 210 million years ago and measured about 15 feet long. It is related to long-necked sauropods and marks only the fifth dinosaur species ever named from Zimbabwe. Scientists believe the region’s remoteness and decades of civil conflict contributed to it being historically understudied compared with fossil-rich sites in Europe and North America. Lead researchers Jonah Choiniere and Paul Barrett say the discovery, along with a related species found in 2024, suggests Zimbabwe and southern Africa hold far more paleontological potential than previously assumed, with new expeditions planned for 2027.
