Sudan’s rich cultural heritage is under siege as preservationists struggle to salvage what remains after more than two years of civil war. The National Museum in Khartoum, once a treasure trove of artifacts, now lies scarred by shattered glass, bullet casings, and looted antiquities. Officials estimate around 4,000 artifacts are missing nationwide, including hundreds from museums in war-torn Darfur, where even curators lost their lives. Smuggling networks have spirited many pieces into neighboring countries, echoing crises seen in Iraq and Syria. Dedicated experts are now sifting through the wreckage, striving to restore what remains, from a temple built by Queen Hatshepsut to damaged artifacts in the Republican Palace. However, they face a monumental task with limited resources and a price tag nearing $100 million. Nevertheless, Sudan’s cultural guardians work against the odds to preserve their nation’s past.
