Nigeria’s opposition scored a symbolic win in the August 16 Osun State governorship race, with incumbent Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party defeating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Oyebamiji. Analysts called the result a warning sign for President Bola Tinubu, who will be seeking re-election in 2027. Although Tinubu praised the outcome as evidence that democracy remains healthy, the campaign was marred by violence that civic groups said killed more than 30 people. Likewise, the anti-graft agency, EFCC, froze Osun’s state accounts in the days leading up to the vote, a move widely seen as targeting Adeleke’s campaign, which Tinubu then intervened to halt. The episode undermines the APC’s aggressive consolidation strategy. The party has strengthened its national position through defections by six governors and at least 75 lawmakers, but the Osun result shows that opposition victories remain possible.
