Nigeria will increase military salaries by up to 80% beginning September 1 after President Bola Tinubu approved a new pay structure aimed at improving troop welfare as the country battles persistent insecurity. The restructuring grants officers above the rank of colonel a 30% raise, warrant officers and colonels 50%, and junior enlisted personnel 80%. The adjustment raises the military’s annual wage bill to $679 million. The decision comes as security forces fight against Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents in the northeast, armed criminal gangs in the northwest, widespread kidnappings for ransom in north-central regions, and separatist violence in the southeast. In addition to troop welfare, Tinubu said his government is committed to modernizing the country’s military and will continue investing in modern weapons and technology to achieve this.
