Nigerian Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka has revealed that the Trump administration revoked his US visa, a decision he says he welcomes. Soyinka, 91, who won the 1986 Nobel Prize in Literature, previously destroyed his green card after Trump’s first election in 2016 and has been openly critical of the US president. Soyinka revealed the decision with characteristic wit, calling the official revocation letter a “curious love letter.” He speculated that the action was a response to his recent comparison of the US president to Uganda’s late dictator, Idi Amin. While Soyinka joked about the revocation, he criticized broader US immigration policies, including aggressive arrests and family separations. Nevertheless, Soyinka signaled that he remains open to visiting the US if circumstances change.
