Nigerian security forces have rescued 308 people abducted separately in Niger and Kwara states, freeing them from Kainji Lake National Park in what President Bola Tinubu called the largest same-day joint rescue in the country’s history. The victims included 163 people abducted from Kwara’s Woro community, where gunmen killed at least 170 residents during a February attack. The remaining 145 captives were abducted in neighboring Niger State. No arrests were reported. The operation is welcome news for the rescued victims and their families. It is also a boost to President Tinubu, who is seeking re-election in January. For kidnapping networks, the operation represents a huge blow, particularly as it proves their strongholds can be penetrated. Long-term, the operation may bolster public confidence in security forces, but lasting success will depend on reducing kidnappings through intelligence, prosecutions, and broader security reforms.
