According to the government, women and children account for about 70% of the returnees, prompting authorities to expand border operations and humanitarian assistance, including food, healthcare, and child nutrition services. For Zimbabwe, the situation presents an opportunity to reintegrate returning citizens and demonstrate its capacity to manage a large-scale humanitarian response. On the other hand, South Africa could experience reduced pressure from domestic anti-migrant sentiment. Returnees themselves bear the greatest costs, facing disrupted livelihoods and reintegration challenges, compounded by malnutrition cases already identified among children. Ultimately, the repatriations underscore persistent economic disparities in Southern Africa and highlight the need for stronger regional cooperation on migration, employment, and border management to prevent recurring crises.
