The Namibian government has mobilized its army to combat a massive wildfire raging through the iconic Etosha National Park. The fire, which has already consumed vast stretches of vital wildlife habitat, threatens one of Africa’s most celebrated game reserves. This unprecedented military deployment highlights the severity of the blaze, with soldiers working alongside park rangers, police, and local volunteers to create firebreaks and protect endangered species. The fire, thought to have originated from charcoal production just beyond park borders, has already consumed vast stretches of wildlife habitat and claimed the lives of antelope, imperiling critical ecosystems. Etosha—home to 114 mammal species, including the endangered black rhino—is now struggling with ecological damage and the toll.
