Kenya has opened a registration process for undocumented Burundians as well as other East Africans. The development follows anxiety over President William Ruto’s directive ordering foreigners out of small-scale trading. Following Ruto’s comments, hundreds of Burundians rushed to secure travel documents to ensure their right to stay in Kenya. Kenya’s government spokesperson Charles Owino said those who register through their respective embassies or high commissions would be presumed legally resident while their status was regularized. Furthermore, authorities gave foreign nationals operating businesses in Kenya 90 days to resolve their immigration, work-permit, business-registration, and licensing requirements. A senior Kenyan official also apologized to Burundians for harassment some had faced, saying Ruto’s directive had been misunderstood.
