Morocco is investing $1.6 billion to develop the Dakhla Atlantic Port, aiming to transform the remote southern coastline into a major hub for regional trade by 2030, as well as a strategic gateway connecting Africa to global markets. The deepwater port, built on an island connected to the mainland by a 1.3 km bridge, is designed to handle the world’s largest container ships, provide repair facilities, and support fishing operations. The project is expected to create 20,000 jobs and enhance trade for both Morocco and landlocked Sahel countries such as Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. In addition, Dakhla is central to an ambitious green hydrogen vision, with $32 billion in planned projects nearby aiming to produce and export clean fuels to Europe.
