Militants Launch Widespread Assaults Across Mali

Insurgents launched coordinated attacks on Malian army positions across multiple towns and cities, including Anefis, Gao, and Sevare, in the latest challenge to the country’s military leadership. Both the Tuareg-led Azawad Liberation Front and al-Qaeda affiliate JNIM claimed involvement, with JNIM saying it seized at least seven positions. Mali’s army said it repelled the attacks and killed a combined 26 fighters in Gao and Sevare, describing the situation as under control. The attacks follow an April operation by the same groups that struck Bamako’s airport and killed Mali’s defense minister. The offensive underscores the growing reach of jihadist groups across the Sahel, where insecurity continues to threaten regional stability despite ongoing counterterrorism operations.
