In a significant move to consolidate power, Madagascar’s new military-led government has unveiled a cabinet composed predominantly of civilians. This decision follows the recent coup that ousted President Andry Rajoelina, who fled the country after widespread youth-led protests over severe power and water shortages. The new interim president, Colonel Michael Randrianirina, swore in Prime Minister Herintsalama Rajaonarivelo and a team of 25 civilians alongside four military officials. Notably, the appointed ministers include prominent critics of the former administration, signaling an attempt at political inclusion. The new government now faces the immense challenge of addressing the nation’s deep economic woes and chronic public service failures that initially sparked the unrest. Protest leaders have yet to respond to the appointments, and Rajoelina, in exile, continues to reject the army takeover.
