Liberia Charges Former Vice President in Cocaine Investigation

By BBC·Edited by Editor TO·

Liberia has charged former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor with drug trafficking, money laundering, and related offenses tied to a transnational narcotics investigation. She was detained before boarding a flight in Monrovia, with police linking her to a $317 million cocaine seizure last month. Howard-Taylor, who is also the ex-wife of former president Charles Taylor, has not publicly responded to the allegations. Three foreign nationals—two Croatians and one Ukrainian—were also charged in absentia. The arrest gives the government an opportunity to demonstrate that political status does not shield suspects from prosecution. However, it has caused reputational damage to Liberia’s political establishment. In the long run, the investigation could strengthen enforcement credibility if it reaches the network’s organizers and financiers.
