Kenya’s political scene has been jolted by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s declaration that he will challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 election. Speaking to supporters in Murang’a, Gachagua framed himself as the only leader capable of preventing Ruto from securing a second term in office. Gachagua aims to leverage his influence in the Mount Kenya region, a crucial voting bloc that was instrumental in Ruto’s 2022 victory, and has chosen the newly launched Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) as his platform. He is also seeking alliances with other prominent Kenyan political leaders. However, Gachagua’s ambitions face a major legal hurdle: his impeachment as Deputy President must be overturned by the courts for his candidacy to be valid.
