South Africa generated more than $14.6 billion from exports of six key commodities during the first half of the year, underscoring the mining sector’s continued importance to the economy. Precious metals, including gold, platinum, diamonds, jewelry, and related products, accounted for the bulk of export earnings, while coal also made a significant contribution. Combined, these exports equaled more than 3% of the country’s annual economic output. Overall commodity prices rose 2.1% in July and 14.1% year-on-year, led by a 21.3% surge in metals and minerals. Platinum, gold, and coal prices all posted double-digit annual gains, though the prices of several commodities have pulled back since the Middle East conflict began, underscoring how closely tied South Africa’s export performance remains to global price swings.
