Ghana’s Small-scale Gold Mining Set for Record Year

Ghana expects artisanal and small-scale gold production to match or exceed last year’s record after the Ghana Gold Board purchased between 50 and 54 metric tons of gold during the first half of 2026. The projection signals another strong year for Ghana’s top export and foreign currency earner, supporting an economy still recovering from its worst financial crisis in decades. Small-scale output has climbed sharply since the government introduced reforms aimed at curbing smuggling and boosting dollar earnings, with 2025 production hitting 104 metric tons and outpacing large-scale mining for the first time. The sector generated nearly $11 billion in foreign exchange last year, compared with about $9 billion from large-scale operations. Although falling gold prices have trimmed earnings forecasts, Ghana still expects higher export revenue than in 2025.
