Ghana Opens 5G Licensing to Competitive Bidding

MTN Group and Telecel Group are preparing to bid for Ghana’s upcoming 5G spectrum licenses after the government ended the exclusive rights previously granted to state-backed Next Gen Infraco (NGIC). Officials concluded that the wholesale provider’s rollout had fallen far behind schedule, with only 49 operational sites compared with a target of 1,200 by 2027. The government revoked NGIC’s concession before its 2034 expiry. The country now plans to introduce a more competitive licensing framework combining wholesale and operator-led networks to accelerate deployment. The move is expected to help the country catch up with regional leaders such as South Africa, Kenya, and Nigeria, where commercial 5G services are expanding rapidly.
