France has rejected the Nigerien government’s accusation that Paris played a role in a failed mutiny in Niamey, calling the claim “pure fantasy.” The dispute follows an August 29 assault on a military airbase and the presidential palace, which Niger’s ruling military council said involved foreign-backed conspirators. Niger’s army, aided by Russian Africa Corps, regained control the following day; hundreds of soldiers reportedly took part, with several killed or detained. Aside from France, Niger’s government has also accused Benin, Chad, Ivory Coast, and ECOWAS of supporting the plot. Benin, like France, has dismissed those claims. Analysts suggest the unrest was more likely driven by growing frustration among frontline soldiers facing heavy losses in the fight against al-Qaeda- and ISIL-linked militants.
