Abiy Ahmed Ethiopia
A national dialogue involving more than 4,000 delegates has endorsed merging Ethiopia’s prime ministerial and presidential roles into a single executive presidency. The proposal, which could reach parliament in October, would let lawmakers—dominated by Abiy’s party—select the new president, with many observers expecting Abiy to be the top contender. Supporters argue that a powerful presidency could provide stronger national leadership and help bridge Ethiopia’s ethnic divisions. Critics, however, fear the proposal could enable Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to consolidate power. Opposition parties boycotted the dialogue, while armed groups were excluded, raising questions about its inclusiveness. The process also exposed unresolved disputes, including the status of Addis Ababa. With conflicts continuing in Oromia and Amhara and renewed concerns about Tigray, the proposed reforms could significantly reshape Ethiopia’s political system.
