Congo Fashion Week Celebrates Sape Dandyism Legacy

By Africanews·Edited by Editor TO·

The sixth edition of DR Congo Fashion Week in Kinshasa brought together designers and “sapeurs” from both the Democratic Republic of Congo and the neighboring Republic of Congo. The event used fashion to highlight shared cultural heritage while showcasing bold prints, bright colors, and contemporary interpretations of traditional influences. La Sape, short for Société des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Élégantes, is a cultural movement centered on dandyism that emerged in the 1960s as Congolese men used European-inspired clothing to reclaim dignity and express identity. Designers at this year’s event paid tribute to influential figures including musicians Papa Wemba and Roga Roga, while emphasizing the movement’s importance to Congolese cultural history. Organizers described La Sape as more than a fashion trend, presenting it as a legacy that connects the two Congos.
